Oh come on, this is not a story. AT&T in the us has not allowed skype to work over 3g until very very recently.
I just go somewhere with wi-fi connection. There are tons of places in Egypt that have wifi. Some are free most are paid by the hour. You’re saving money by using wifi over 3g as VOIP needs high bandwidth to work and uses your allotted data plans. Mobile companies are concerned that their networks can not keep up with demand for bandwidth that smartphone users use.

Another option with family in the us or Europe is of they have a good long distance package, they can call the person in Egypt. Yes it’s more expensive then free over the net but it’s cheaper than using your cellphone to call internationally. Otherwise find a nice quiet coffee shop and have your long weekly talks there. Or you could use one of the dsl companies. They didn’t ban skype in Egypt, they just are trying to provide equal access to the 3g bandwidth.
